song: good ol' times

for this song and reflection, I do have to give songwriting credits to my best friend as well, this is song that we wrote together in 2019, sitting in a bubble tea shop that had an electric keyboard at the time.

It was a summer day I think? I just remember having bubble tea, vamping it out and writing out lyrics on a notebook, and finishing the song in a few hours

There's a certain fondness that I have for this song, because it celebrates a dear friendship, a friendship that spans over a decade and more. So thank you for being with me throughout all the good and bad times.

I was super curious tonight if I could find an original recording of the song, and I did, I believe this was the same day we wrote it, June 30th of 2019, and god, listening back to it and seeing how it's evolved, I had to brace myself a bit. I actually found several voice memos of us working it through, figuring out and forgetting melodies, and then trying to do different takes.

And I am bracing myself because it's crazy how the melody evolved and how long it's really been. 5 years almost and even as I hear our voices, it's just wow.

I'm kind of rambling, I'm not sure if anything I said has made any sense.

Let's restart :)

Alrighty, we are on song number 8 out of 11, and this week's song is special because it's a song that both my best friend and I wrote together in June 2019. This was at a bubble tea shop that had an electric keyboard out for the first time, so we were just playing around. And based off of the time stamps of my recordings, we finished the song in around 2 hours.

This song is about our friendship and growing up together in high school so if you look at our lyrics, it just really talks about how we came to be and both our perspectives in our relationship :)

Verse 1 is about how we started becoming closer

Verse 2 is my best friend's view

Verse 3 is my view

And the chorus hits me even now, as it's kind of this promise or vow? Just like in count your stars, that we'll be by each other's side. Because as I think of the seasons of life we were in at the time, we were separated in post-secondary as we pursued different things, in different cities and the summer time was our chance to chill and hangout.

The screenshot below is from an email, the year that we wrote the song

And if I fast forward to today, I am grateful, because there was that stormy period of time, where I had gone on a hiatus, and they had waited so patiently for me, and as life passed us by, I had finally had the courage to go back into socializing, we had just kept on going.

we tried to find the time to feel the same, like the good ol' times. sharing our space, making the bitter sweet memories and enjoying our company together.

I am just entirely grateful and filled with love to think of us and our friendship. All of this still stands, and here we are still growing, making it through, surviving and vibing.

Yeah this song is very personal in the verses, but I want to grab onto the feelings that the chorus focuses on.

I invite you to take a moment and reflect:

Is there anyone you can think of, where the space you two share, regardless of how long it's been, it just feels the same, like the good ol' times? Cherish those people and honestly, know that you are loved. Maybe send them gratitude and love.

And if you are still finding these type of people, I know they will come your way. Keep on surviving and vibing, your energy and space will mesh with others, I believe in it.

Yeah, honestly this song is just a tender friendship song, and I hope you can count your stars around you, that have been there whether the longest or the brightest for you. Not sure what I'll do for the creative prompt, but I'll figure it out as we go.

if you have reached this far, thank you so much for reading and holding a space with me.

Take care always,
