welcome to song reflection number 10, we have one more next week and that is the end of this journey through songs, I specifically curated these songs in a certain order,
this certain order follows a poem that I made for myself and the intentions of this journey, this space, and hopes for community. So if you'd like to check out the poem, click here!
With this song in particular, sunshine baby is just a fun composition I made in 2019, if I recall correctly, I was experimenting with snapping and slapping the guitar strings, and that definitely brings this upbeat and bright sound to the song. So I also like this song a lot because it was also a marker of my self-taught guitar playing.
Hmm, what can I really say about sunshine baby?
So sunshine baby is not based on any person unlike song: by our lakeside
I definitely think as a Filipino Singer Songwriter, it's just in the genes and stereotypes to write some kind of romance song, and this one just happens to be about the butterfly feelings and being in love.
Even if this is a simple song with repeating melodies, I think the cutest thing about this song are the lyrics and how my pre-chorus and chorus melody leads with this elated feeling. As I continue to listen to it, whether if past me intended or not, a lot of my melody responds with the lyrics.
For example. when I say at the end of my chorus, i hope that gravity won't pull me down, the melody goes lower in pitch when I sing pull me down or when I sing You've got me high in the sky, I ascend in higher pitch, same thing with I feel like I'm in the clouds.
I would say this song in particular, is definitely one of my favourites, as it takes a simple chord progression and melody, and then you put it with an analogy of love being like the sunshine, WOW, can't get anymore cuter and wholesome. Am I fufilling the Filipino Singer-songwriter Youtuber arc yes. I definitely am.
Something I also want to recognize is that 5 years apart, my voice is definitely stronger and I am able to hit those higher notes without going into my head voice. So this journey also allowed me to reflect on my growth and seasons as a musician.
I definitely feel the positive vibes of sunshine baby and I just love this analogy with the weather. Once again, I mentioned it somewhere, I usually mention if not the sky, sunset or sunrise, it's storms or something weather related.
I definitely feel like a broken record right now, I don't have much to write other than I really like this song and it's just a very sweet bright upbeat song from 2019. I remember performing it once after a concert, and one of my program mates actually recorded it and say they really enjoyed it.
So yeah, just going with the positive vibes of this song.
I invite you to take a moment and reflect:
What are the things or who are the people that are like your sunshine for you? That make you feel like you're in the clouds? Let's just celebrate these joys and feel gratitude. After every storm, it'll be sunshine baby, know that you are loved always :)
Because love can exist in many different ways, from different people and things. Things that are like sunshine for me are the sky pictures that I take, the way my brother and I laugh at each other and make faces, the posts I send to friends, the giggles I hear at work. The people who are special to me all like sunshine too, all of them have been mentioned in one way or another in this project too. But yeah, take a moment and let that sink in, you are loved. always.
if you have reached this far, thank you so much for reading and holding a space with me.
Take care always,
